He couldn’t seem to take his eyes off her.

Evan realized he wasn’t the only one as they made their way from the beach toward the crowd that had already formed in front of a tall waterfall surrounded by tropical trees and shrubs. The helicopter had landed about a half mile away from where the ceremony would be held. A two-person buggy driven by a tuxedoed driver had taken them the rest of the way.

Louis and Gemma had gone all out. He would have to take notes for when—

Whoa. Where had that thought come from? He wasn’t going to need notes about any kind of wedding reception anytime soon. He just wasn’t meant for any sort of real relationship. He couldn’t even make peace with the two people who had brought him into the world. The only other person he’d ever grown close to... Well, she was gone for good.

He liked his solitary life just fine. He just had to pretend otherwise until he got the signatures on the dotted line.

First, though, he had to get through this wedding. And he had to play the part of a besotted man in love. Glancing at Chiara walking beside him, he had to admit the act might be easier than he would have expected. He hadn’t been exaggerating when he’d told her she looked stunning. The silky wrap dress she wore brought out the dazzling color of her eyes. The fabric clung to her in all the right places. Her hair was done up in some complicated style that somehow looked both elegant and loose. His fingers itched to loosen the ribbon tie and run his fingers down every strand. Then he could proceed to slip the thin straps off her shoulders and lower her dress.

Just. Stop.

He certainly sounded besotted, didn’t he?

He couldn’t begin to explain what might be wrong with him. It had to be the unusual circumstances he and Chiara were in that had him behaving so uncharacteristically. Slipping an engagement ring on a woman’s finger before accompanying her to a romantic wedding would have a disarming effect on any man.

He was only human, after all.

They were approaching the seating area with chairs set up in front of a small waterfall when he heard his name called out from behind. He knew that voice well.

If it wasn’t the groom himself.

He turned to find Louis striding toward them. The other man reached their side in seconds and Evan couldn’t even be sure which one of them initiated the hug.

“Don’t you have somewhere to be?” Evan asked, teasing his dearest friend. “What are you doing out here?”

“I had to see for myself who finally managed to pull this man away from his computer servers.” He leaned toward Chiara and jokingly spoke in a quiet voice, his hand hiding both their faces. “You sure you know what you’re getting into?”

Chiara answered with a laugh and reached her hand out. “I think so. It’s very nice to meet you, Louis. Congratulations.”

“Thanks for coming. I hope you enjoy yourself.
