During our morning alert preflight one hot day in Texas, my crew and I heard over the command post radio that an unannounced KC-135 was on final. Since we knew our wing was imminent for an ORI, we watched with interest as the plane landed and proceeded to taxi up to the front of base ops. When the engines were shut down, a team of blue suited officers began piling out of the newly arrived plane. I had been preflighting the sextant and put the crosshairs on the team leader as he immerged like a sniper would have centered his sight on his target. Had it been a sniper’s rifle, I could have nailed him. That’s just how happy I was to be on alert when an ORI hit. A minute later we saw our wing commander and his staff show up and greet the visitors and the congregation proceeded to shake hands and share the most common lies swapped during any inspection visit in SAC – “We’re here to help you” answered by “We’re glad to have you.”
