Candi’s Mother-in-Law

“My mother-in-law died five years ago,” my friend Candi told me.

Nausea threatened to overtake me; I immediately knew the woman in question was wayward. But that was just the beginning. I waited calmly for Candi to continue, and swallowed hard.

She paused and took a drag from her cigarette, then put her blinker on and took the next exit off I-65. We were driving to Nashville to pick up her daughter.

“She’s helping my soon-to-be-ex find me,” Candi said.

The story of Candi actually started about six months earlier. Dwayne, who is Native American, and I used to vend at powwows (Native American festivals that showcase Native artists and their heritage), and on the way home from one I was dozing in the passenger seat next to him when I had a vision of a woman with long dark hair.

“I have to kill him before he kills me!” she yelled at me.

“You don’t have to kill him,” I told her. “You just have to get away from him.”

“No! I have to kill him before he kills me!” she kept insisting.

I came out of this vision shaking with fear. After calming down for a few minutes, I told Dwayne about it.

About a month later, Dwayne came home from a powwow and told me about this couple he wanted me to meet. The next day was Sunday and I was off work. We went to the fairground where the festival was being held, and I met Candi and her partner.

After getting to know her for a few hours, I told her about the vision I’d had. She confirmed that she’d dyed her red hair dark brown at about that time, and that she still felt that way about her husband. “Shaken to the core” doesn’t begin to describe how I felt; I knew I had been directed, in a big way, to meet her and become friends with her.

“Your husband knows his mother is wayward?” I asked Candi now, as we drove down a busy street in Nashville.

“Yes.”

We pulled up the drive to the hotel and checked in. The accommodations were nice and we settled in quickly. I called Dwayne to let him know we’d arrived safely.

“So, what about your mother-in-law?” I asked after I’d gotten off my phone.

“She’s with us now.”

“So that’s why I’m feeling nauseated,” I said. It wasn’t the same feeling I get when the tunnel opens near me; it was somehow a “sicker” feeling than that.

“Yeah, me too,” she said. “He has enough psychic ability to understand her. I’ve barely been able to keep a step or two ahead of him, to keep him from finding me.”

I immediately put up a blocking shield to keep our conversation private. What we were going to discuss did not need to go any farther. With the shield in place, Candi’s mother-in-law would not be able to hear or sense our plan for how to cross her to the other side.

“Wow. Let me ask for help on this one,” I said.

“Sure.”

That night I prayed for help and received a dream.
