Phoenix felt the moment Storme lost consciousness—the connection they shared severed in an abrupt silence. He burst into the expansive office and jogged toward the slender woman holding a crystal tumbler in her hand. Who dared to harm his beautiful Storme? Who was this woman who’d bound and mistreated his mate?

The bitch turned, and his heart stopped beating. Mother?

It was one of those moments you can’t prepare for—like standing on the edge of a glacier and the entire ice-face giving way beneath your feet. His whole world shifted.

You fucking bitch.

There was no stopping him.

He lost hold on his control and burst into a white-hot fury. His blade was out of its sheath and sailing through the air at the same time he pounded his shitkickers into the carpet and barreled full-bodied at the evil spawn who’d given him life.

His mother’s hands came and knocked him back with a powerful bolt of magic. It came a split-second too late to defend herself, though, and his blade found purchase.

Unleashing everything locked deep within, he loosed his dark magic strength. A toxic current burned through him and he welcomed the rush of power he’d denied for almost two-thousand years. To take her down, he needed the juice and wouldn’t regret letting it into his life.

The flood of power hit him like a wrecking ball.

As she attacked, he turned the tables. He regained his footing, absorbing the sting and bite of her power, consuming her strength as she bombarded him with one assault after another.

He shielded his vital organs, casting spells as they flooded to the surface of his mind after a lifetime of neglect.

The bitch had the gall to look surprised. Did she not think he would fight? No, that wasn’t it.

She didn’t recognize him.

His muscles pumped hard, battling through her strikes until he was close enough to ram the hilt of his blade through her chest and out the back of what was sure to be a priceless, silk treasure. What’s the matter, Mother. Don’t you remember me?

“Thutmose?” Her eyes widened as blood spread across her front in a scarlet stain. “My son.”

Fuck you, he spat, not understanding how this was even possible. Still luring powerful innocents into your web, are you? How many have there been over the centuries?

She fell against the front of the desk and the mask of feigned innocence dissolved. “More than you can count.”

He watched her bleed, waiting for something within him to give a shit. Nope. Nothing. Why aren’t you dead? Seth killed you after what you did to me.

“Seth? Is that what Ahmose calls himself these days? That boy always did have a soft spot for his dear mommy.” The woman choked, and then coughed, blood spraying out of her mouth and down her chin. “He couldn’t kill me. He likely told you what you wanted to hear. You always were gullible.”

Phoenix couldn’t feel his arms or his feet. When he looked down at his hands, he could see them shaking, but nothing registered in his brain.
