SERENA

“Zaxon!” she cried out, trying to maintain control over the fear that threatened to overtake her. “What the hell is this?”

“Trap,” he grunted, equally disoriented and vulnerable as he swung beside her. “Varekai trap. We triggered the tripwires.”

“Fantastic,” Serena spat, her anger in full force. “Well, I suppose this is one way to get a bird’s-eye view of the place.”

“Save your wit for later,” Zaxon growled, his fierce alien warrior instincts kicking in. “We need to find a way out of this.”

“Fine,” she conceded, her mind racing with possibilities. “Maybe if we can swing towards each other, we can use our combined weight to break free from these hooks.”

“Or we might end up tangled together and even more vulnerable,” Zaxon countered, his conflicted loyalty evident in his voice. “But it’s better than hanging here like bait.”

“Exactly,” Serena agreed. “Now start swinging.”

As they attempted to free themselves, Serena couldn’t help but think of the Kryllian slaver who had made her a captive. The memory of his twisted, grotesque face haunted her, and she knew she could never let herself fall into an enemy’s grasp again.

“Almost there,” Zaxon grunted, his muscles straining as he swung closer to Serena. “On the count of three, we’ll pull together and try to break free. One… two… three!”

Failure. Complete and total failure.

Serena hung suspended from the Varekai hooks, her entire body aching with pain, and she could feel the blood rushing to her head. Beside her, Zaxon struggled against his bindings, his face contorted in anger and desperation. She could see the determination in his eyes, but their efforts to break free were futile. The Varekai hooks had them firmly in their grasp.

Her heart pounded in her chest as the Varekai warriors approached, their menacing forms casting shadows over them. Their piercing eyes seemed to bore into her very soul, making her shudder in fear. She tried to remain strong, but the terror coursing through her was palpable.

The Varekai took Zaxon down first, his muscular form dropping to the ground with a thud. They pulled Serena down next, her legs weak from the ordeal, she stumbled. They were roughly escorted underground to a dimly lit chamber where the interrogation would take place.

Serena watched, her stomach twisting in horror, as the Varekai interrogators began their cruel torture of Zaxon. They started by binding his arms behind his back, then hoisting him up by the wrists until his feet dangled inches above the ground. His face contorted in pain, but he remained silent, unwilling to give the Varekai any satisfaction.

Next, they brought out a crude whip made of braided leather, embedded with sharp stones and shards of bone. The lead interrogator lashed it across Zaxon’s back, tearing his skin and leaving bloody welts in its wake. He gritted his teeth, trying to suppress his cries, but the agony was too much to bear, and guttural screams escaped his lips.

“Tell us what you know about the Tharvani resistance,” demanded the lead Varekai interrogator, his voice dripping with malice.

“Go to hell,” Zaxon spat, his breath hitching from the agony they were inflicting on him.
