Chapter 14

Isaac

It seemed like the world was being sapped of color again, as it had in the woods around Canderfey when the Hollow stole shades of green. This time it was only my own mood, my head too heavy with worry and wondering about Callum to enjoy the sight of Rhodantis, of Claudia’s beautiful home.

Joanna’s feet were stumbling as we made it into Aiden’s room, her eyes heavy-lidded, and in the dark even she was turning colorless, skin going moon white and hair losing its bright sheen.

“Come here, love,” I said, leading her over to the bed and sitting down in front of her. “I promise you only have to stay upright long enough for me to get you into something to sleep in.”

She hummed and swayed a bit in front of me before stilling. The room was a gray-blue, moonlight slipping in from a window facing the garden. Her dress was black and inky over her skin in the darkness, and I tried to imagine dipping a paintbrush into the color and spreading it over a canvas, a color of secrets and aching.

“I’m trying to remind myself that I don’t hate everyone but our own coven,” she said, her back to me as I undid delicate black pearl buttons at the base of her spine.

I swallowed a laugh at the declaration. “You didn’t have a nice time at the party?” I asked, dripping sarcasm. I’d been a little relieved not to go, although the evening alone had seemed to run at half speed while I waited for them to return.

Her shoulders shook and for a moment I thought she was laughing too and then I realized that she was shaking with dry, silent sobs. I abandoned the buttons in favor of pushing the dress off her, and she twisted out of it, climbing into my lap even as the fabric slid down her leg to land on the floor. Her arms tangled over my shoulder and I pressed my nose to her shoulder, breathing her in and smelling the perfume of the party on her skin.

“He’s safe,” I said to her, and it felt like a prayer more than a promise.

She nodded, pulling in a deep breath and pressing up close to my chest, her hands reaching up to frame my face.

“We’ll get him back,” she said, the words every bit as wishful as mine had been. Her eyes scanned my cheeks, my mouth, and then rose back to my own, tears shining on her cheeks. “Tell me how to make this easier for you and Aiden.”

“Don’t,” I whispered, chest burning. “We don’t think this is any different for you than it is for us just because we’ve known him longer. We’re all a coven.”

Her expression crumpled for half a beat before smoothing again. I leaned in, resting my forehead to hers. “I need something else to focus on,” she said, words small. “Just in times like this, when we can’t move faster than we already are. When we can’t get to him yet.
