Chapter 19 Safety Valves

Robin said, “Go ahead. The instructions are right there.”

I looked over the controls. Yeah, I needed to know how all of this worked. Everything was clearly labeled. And there were written procedures that told what to do. Robin and Grant really had thought this through. The instructions told me to turn on a pump motor first.

Robin said, “That’s so that the French drain can collect the runoff in tanks and keep the system from getting flooded.”

Next, I turned on the switches for each part of the house. For walls and windows. “Those need to be on so that they start making room for the snow to fall off the roof.” Next came the doors. Robin explained, “We don’t really have to do the doors. The back door is covered, and we can always go in and out that way, but what if it gets stuck or broken? It’s just best to have all the doors clear, just in case. Don’t turn on the roof heaters yet. I wanted an automatic system that would sense all of this and just do it whenever it was necessary, and no one would have to remember, but that hasn’t been done yet. So, we need to wait until the walls are clear, and then we start the roof. In a few hours. Unless it looks like we are getting too much on the roof, and then we have to turn it on anyway. I do hope we can get the automatic system put in soon, though. It’s just not safe if we have to remember. And what if we were sick or couldn’t come down here? Maybe we should put a control system in the bedroom next to the bed.”

An automated system with sensors was something I could easily design, given my background and experience. I’d give that some thought.

Robin was spiraling into insecurity again. “Robin, there are four of us now. That makes everything safer. If one of us can’t take care of it, one of the others can. Isn’t that right? So, we’ll work on the automatic systems, but we don’t want a control panel in the bedroom. The bedroom is for a different kind of safety.”

Chloe jumped in to help. She was used to this. “Yeah, Robin, the bedroom is safe all by itself. You don’t want control panels next to the bed. Just things that make us cozy and warm and loved.”

Robin said, “Oh, that does sound nice.” She was suddenly calm again. “Well, I’ll finish making the bed and get started on the laundry and plan some lunch. I hope Elizabeth calls soon.”

Chloe said, “She will. She’ll call Bruce, and then he’ll call you.”

My phone happened to ring right then. “Oh, there she is now. I’ll go to my office.”

Chloe said, “Nichole and I will meet you there in a few minutes. We’ll go hook up the snowblower.”

I answered the phone. “Hey, Sis. Everything OK? Good. Give me a minute to get to my office.” I hurried upstairs and closed the office door behind me.
