Chapter Five

It didn’t take Trent and Drew very long to return with their bags. Drew brought some more computer hardware as well. They also brought her a delicious sandwich with a pickle and some chips.

While they had been gone, she had talked with her sister. Ellie had told her that she had got sick after entering a nightclub owned by the scion of the local Vampire Lord. With some careful questioning, Evie had also learnt that Ellie had some holes in her memory after she had gone in to retrieve a known junkie who had been selling his services to the highest bidder.

It wasn’t forbidden to work magic for money. What was forbidden was to work magic for money when the payer wanted to harm Coven interests. The Coven was brutal when it came to those who worked against the good of the witches. The junkie witch had lost all ability to tell his payer, who also happened to be the supplier of his drugs, no.

Ellie had entered the nightclub on a tip that her quarry would be there to score. She’d blacked out, but had forgotten it when she’d found the very dead junkie in the back alley.

It was very hard to get the drop on a Guardian. It should have been impossible for anyone to do so with Ellie. But as they talked, both of them concluded that the water bottle she had ordered while she’d waited for her quarry to arrive had been tainted. It had to be that because Ellie hadn’t ingested anything else.

The most sinister part of the story was that Ellie didn’t know what had happened to her during her period of lost time. Whatever it was, it included infecting her sister with the magic disease.

This led Evie to conclude that the magic sickness wasn’t caught person to person or witch to witch. Someone was deliberately infecting witches.

After hanging up with Ellie, Evie had called the local Vampire Lord. She had left a detailed message that included informing him that someone was using his club to infect witches. She had yet to receive a call back. But Lucien and the Coven were on pretty good terms. Evie had no doubt that she would be receiving a return call.

After finishing their food, Drew and Trent went to work on backtracking the incidence of magic sickness. They had narrowed it down to Texas, but in reality, discovering such a big state was the locale of the initial case wasn’t very helpful. Texas was a big state. So the two of them were furthering their search so that they would know exactly where the first case of magic sickness appeared.

It had got dark as they had all worked on their respective tasks. When she noticed, she put away her work and cleaned up her stillroom.

“Oh, hey, guys,” she greeted them when she returned to her house. “I think we should stop for the night. My eyes are getting cross-eyed from looking at too many slides.”

“Yeah, Trent and I have called it quits for the day as well.
