EIGHTEEN

ARLO

I stalked out of the room, yanking off my jacket and tossing it over a banister before rolling up my sleeves and making my way to my office. The last thing I should be doing right now is locking myself away with my brother’s girlfriend on a secluded island. But I had a lot to do. And she knew him better than anyone, even me, though I hated to admit it. I couldn’t just leave her wandering the streets of Chicago mourning the death of Owen when the enemy needed to believe I was the one dead.

I held her world in the palm of my hand and could crush it on a whim. I found myself in a very unique situation. I could use my looks to help her heal, or forever taint the memory of my brother in her eyes.

I sank down in the chair behind my desk before picking up a picture of my brother with Alice. He was smiling as she kissed him on the cheek. I tossed it back on the desktop before rubbing my palm along my stubbled jaw. It was like looking at how my life could have been had I chosen to walk away from this world like Owen had. Maybe part of me was jealous that he chose to live his own life, and not give up on his dreams. Or maybe I was still livid that I had to go through so much on my own when he was supposed to be by my side, helping me.

There was so much on the line now. Grace had yet to pick which of my sons would be my successor. Ryder was the obvious choice. He was the older twin, like I was, level-headed but ruthless when necessary.

Ryker was a different kind of beast. He didn’t fall in love, he drowned in obsession. That’s why I learned how to control him early, giving him something just out of reach to keep him focused on until his talents were needed elsewhere. Most would see that as a negative, but it made him determined. Once set on a path, he wouldn’t deviate until he’d gotten what he wanted or eliminated the problem. That’s why he made such a good button man for our business. He was also very good at hiding it. Grace would never see what kind of monster lurked beneath his smile before he bit her. That made him more dangerous than Ryder, who wouldn’t hesitate to tell you his next move, if only so he could enjoy the fear of anticipation.

But time was of the essence. Someone would be watching, waiting for one of my boys to step up as the next capo, given my absence and supposed untimely death. I wouldn’t be able to keep them in the dark for long.

Putting my fate in the hands of Ryatt wasn’t ideal, but given the circumstances, I didn’t have many other options. It wasn’t a secret that Relic was making moves now that he outranked Ryatt for a brief moment in time.
