Further up on the right-hand side is the memorial to the 20th (Light) Division. This was a formation which had been raised in 1914 and was made up of Light Infantry regiments, including the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, with which Harry Patch served here in 1917. Harry visited this memorial on one of his return visits.

Continue along the road to the bridge over the Steenbeek river. Stop.

On the bridge is a Belgian memorial to King Albert of the Belgians and his troops. It carries the date 28th September 1918, which was when Belgian troops under the command of their King finally liberated this region of Belgium. With the memorial in front of you, turn round and look across the road bridge to some modern houses on the other side of the road. This is the site of Au Bon Gite, a large German concrete bunker. This two-tiered bunker was attacked by the 11th Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps, part of the 20th (Light) Division, on 16th August 1917. Sergeant Edward Cooper of the 11th KRRC was later awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery here at that time:

Langemarck church in 1915.
