12th (EASTERN) DIVISION MEMORIAL, FEUCHY CHAPEL

In the initial advance at Arras 12th (Eastern) Division lost 2,144 officers and men. By the close of their involvement in the Arras fighting, a further 5,000 or more soldiers from this unit had been killed or wounded. Before the division was disbanded in 1919, it was decided to erect two divisional memorials on the old battlefields; one at Feuchy, and the other at Epéhy where it fought in 1918. This one was unveiled on 24th July 1921, in the presence of Major General Scott, who had commanded the Division in 1917, and the mayors of all the local villages. A large crowd of old soldiers from the Division also attended, and the Last Post was sounded by Sergeant A. Miller, who had fought with 9th Essex in Battery Valley.

1 Second Lieutenant Robert Mortimer Earl of Shannon. He survived this battle, only to be killed near Guemappe on 13th April 1917. No known grave; Arras Memorial.
