overnight because it was a short walk away from the train station. He intended to walk to the station after breakfast and catch the morning train to Sydney.
Hang on a minute, did he just say Sydney? My blood froze. I was in Australia. How the hell did I get here? I tried desperately not to panic. I knew that there had to be a reasonable explanation, but I was damned if I could figure it out. It appeared that I had bought some camping stuff which was in the tent with me. A small primer stove, a kettle, some coffee, matches, cornflakes and sugar. I had a sleeping bag that had not proved much use in the icy night. I also had some washing stuff. That meant I had had to shop for these things since I had arrived in Australia. My camp mate had told me that the journey to Sydney was two hours by train. So somehow I had managed to get from the airport to the centre of Sydney and onto a train and to the campsite. I looked in my pocket for tickets. I found the stub of the train ticket. It appeared that I was in a town called Katoomba. I knew that name. I had been here before. It was the site of the ‘three sisters’ rock outcrop that I had visited the previous year with Helen.
This realization stunned me. How had I managed to get myself here? In addition to the receipt for the train fare I also found a receipt for the bits and pieces I had bought that were in my tent and also a receipt from a motel in the town where it appeared I had spent the previous night. I had been in the country for two days now. In addition to the flight over that meant that it must be Wednesday. I had not been in touch with Helen for that time. She must have been going out of her mind. I switched on my mobile and there were a number of text messages from her asking me to get in touch with her. Each one seemed to be getting more frantic. There was also a text from our local Police asking me to get in touch with them. I replied to one of texts from Helen. I said that it appeared I had done something really silly and I was very frightened. She replied asking me if I was in Australia. How did she know? I said that I was but I did not really know how I got here. She explained that her daughter, Louise, had alerted the Police in Sydney and they were looking for me. She suggested that I get in touch with her daughter and arrange somewhere to meet in Sydney. We could then start to figure out what had happened.
I text Louise and explained where I was. I said that I was going to get back on the train and would be heading for Sydney.
