TIM BARNETT’S BROTHER, Oak, came to Dickson to pick him up on Sunday, saying, “Hey, we’re going to see Dad.” Gosh, finally! thought Tim. Some normalcy or something.

When they got back to their house in Waverly, it was full of people. Tim’s oldest brother, Aaron, was there, home from the Navy. There were no outgoing long distance lines Friday after the explosion, but apparently, J.C. Morrisett, of the Humphreys County chapter of the American Red Cross, had used ham radio communications to get in touch with a Red Cross official at the Tennessee Civil Defense Agency headquarters. He was able to ask Civil Defense personnel to have the Red Cross official call him by phone, since incoming lines were still operational. Morrisett asked the Red Cross official to find a way to reach Aaron Barnett in the US Navy.

The official sent a message from Nashville to Washington, DC, which was then relayed to the ship on which Aaron was stationed. The message he received was: “Dad hurt in explosion.” The only thing he could think of was the big natural gas tanker they had just had installed at the house for heating purposes. What else could have exploded and hurt his dad?

When Aaron got to Nashville, the Metro Nashville Chief of Police, Joe Casey, picked him up and drove so fast to Waverly it seemed as if they were flying. “What’s going on?” Aaron asked. Chief Casey told him then what had happened.

So when Tim returned to his house on Sunday, they were all ready to get on the Governor’s plane that had been sent to fly them down to Birmingham, where his daddy was. Before they could leave the house, though, the phone rang. Somebody, one of the many men who was crowding Tim’s living room, took the call, and Tim could tell it was his mother on the other end of the line. The man hung up the phone and said to Tim, “That was God calling. Your dad’s gone.”
