Put your team together and get them going on two projects critical to your exit strategy: an open market valuation of your company and an audit of your financial records based on GAAP. Once that’s done, work with your CPA to correct any flaws in your financial reporting, especially if up to now you’ve been keeping your books on a cash basis.

Plan annual meetings at the same time each year, during which you’ll discuss your exit planning, strategies to increase the value and sellability of your company, and other relevant issues. Right after those meetings, have your team do updated valuations and financial audits. This will ensure that you have the most up-to-date information possible on earnings and the value of your business. If someone pops up with an unsolicited offer, you’ll be prepared.
