Chapter Nineteen

Luke woke without need of an alarm. He blinked, looked over to the clock, and saw it was his usual time to start the day. The problem was, he felt like he hadn’t been to bed at all. He must have slept, but couldn’t recall watching the clock or being awake. Whatever rest he’d achieved that merited the name had been insufficient according to the way his body felt at the moment. But there was nothing to do except power through it and start the day.

He sighed, shoved the tangled covers aside, and sat at the edge of the bed. He turned on the bedside lamp to get more light than was peeping through the curtains, then made his way to the bathroom, where he turned the shower handle to the hottest setting and waited for the water to heat then fill the enclosure with steam. Memories floated into his consciousness, but he shoved them firmly aside and stepped into the shower, luxuriating in the hot water flowing over his fatigued body. Lathering up, he wanted no part of anything except Staci’s lips. Wrong thought to have. His body reacted instantly. He turned the water to a chilly cool. Damn. His thoughts of her took free rein. What was happening to him? His well-ordered life had turned upside down. Maybe Charlie was right, and he needed to face facts that his feet were on a fresh path. But to where? To what? No answers presented themselves and he finished up the shower, stepping out onto the bathmat. He shaved and dressed, eager to get to the coffee pot in the office. With everything going on, he hadn’t bought any for home.

He pulled on his gun belt, grabbed his badge holder and keys, and headed out the door. Rain and thunder were on tap for the drive to the station. Perfect for his state of mind. He forced his concentration to the road, grateful for very little traffic on the streets. He made it to the station just as the light rain turned to a heavy downpour, and he quickly pulled into his parking space, grabbed his gear, and headed inside just as a loud clap of thunder rumbled overhead. True to form, Charlie was already there and the smell of coffee drew him to the break room like a bee to honey.

“Oh, there you are.” Charlie took a sip of coffee as she looked him over like a fresh vegetable in a supermarket.

“Yep. Here I am.” He didn’t meet her gaze, but busied himself with finding a cup, putting in the requisite amount of sugar, creamer, and coffee, then stirring it. Anything to keep from looking at his personal Sherlock Holmes.

“You realize that simply avoiding my line of sight will not make me, or my questions, go away, right?” There was a note of frustration tinged with amusement in Charlie’s voice.

He sighed and met her gaze. Before saying a word, he downed a mouthful of hot coffee. Hot as love and sweet as hell.
