away from where my mother and brother were jumping up and down in the water.
For me, being abused in a public place in front dozens of people was the final humiliation, and confirmation of the fact that I was completely powerless every way. As Carl joked and smiled, I'd know that I trapped until he decided to release me. I'd be almost rigid with terror at the thought that someone might see what he was doing, and I can still remember the look of horror on the face of the young boy who one day did realise that Carl's hand was between my legs and inside my swimming costume.
Carl never seemed to tire of thinking up new ways to abuse and control me, and one night, when he and mother ran out of Bacardi, he insisted on driving to off-licence to buy some more. As time passed, it see: to take more alcohol to render my mother unconscious but she must already have been too drunk - or too indifferent - to argue when he told her he was going to me with him.
My pleas to be left at home were simply wasted breath and as soon as we reached the dark, winding back roads: away from the estate, he told me to sit on his knee. I wary, as I always was of anything Carl told me to do, he reassured me, 'Come on. There are no other around. I thought you'd like to steer.'
I was going to learn to drive a car! I could hardly believe Carl was offering to do something so exciting, and I clambered around the gear stick and slipped on to his knee behind the steering wheel. He showed me how to position my hands and how to turn the wheel just a little bit so that we didn't swerve all over the road. And then he put his own hands up my skirt and into my knickers and I could feel his penis pressing up against me.
I began to squirm, trying to get him off me. But he pressed his foot a little harder on the accelerator and shouted, 'Look out! Don't let go of the steering wheel! We're going to crash!' And instinctively I stopped struggling and tightened my grip on the wheel.
On the way home, he told me to sit on his lap again, but 1 refused.
'Come on,' he wheedled. 'I'll let you drive. I won't do anything this time. I won't touch you. I promise.'
So I climbed back on to his knee and he put his hand back inside my knickers.
When you're a child, you want to trust people; and, if you don't, you're easily made to feel that the fault lies with you. So when an adult says 'Trust me', you believe again and again that this time you can; this time they're telling the truth and they won't trick or hurt you. And each time they do the thing that past experience should have told you they would
