Petrov (1955) presents a more developed version of the above-mentioned relationships, using an equation which takes into account vessel’s displacement and speed, impact duration and the angle at which the floe hits the hull (Eq. 5.3). The equation takes into account only the horizontal force components. In reality, forces are distributed in three dimensions, because the surface of vessel plating at the place of impact is at different angles to the three axes of the spatial coordinate system. The formula does not take into account ice weight. Ryvlin and Heysin (1980) discovered a relationship between the duration of impact and vessel’s speed, its capability to break through ice, type of ice navigation, ice concentration and its horizontal dimensions of 1.5–7 meters.
