In my old corporate job, I started work on the same day as another lady. I was joining the company to be the in-house legal counsel. She was joining to become head of a marketing group. The marketing group was a one-person team, meaning she was the only person on the team. Fast forward just a few years and she became Chief Operating Officer of the firm.

I remember her distinctly when I met her on that first day. She had a distinct and strong high volume voice. It was loud and bossy sounding. Well, it was so bossy, she became my boss and everyone else’s boss! If you listen to her speak, her voice is distinctly high status. With a high status voice comes higher work status.
