“I swear if you knew about this, I will murder you again,” I hiss at my father. Not too long ago, the doctor put me on oxygen, and then once he pumped some kind of drug into my IV to keep my throat from swelling, I could talk a little easier. It took far too long, and that entire time, I glared at my dad.

Know what that old man did?

Tried to possess the nurse. Then the doctor. When he couldn’t achieve that, he disappeared, saying he had some things to check on.

He just popped back in, and my voice only just returned to normal. I’m feeling better, and the doctor applauded how quickly I healed. Just another note in my mental checklist to review when I’m not on a military base where they will probably poke and prod me with far too much interest.

“You always were an odd child.” Dad sits in the chair beside me.

Reminding myself I have to keep it down, I whisper, albeit angrily, “Did you know?” I wave at my eyes. “What the hell is this?”

“You know Artie didn’t tell me anything.” He rubs his chin like an evil villain.

“I swear you two had an affair,” I accuse, and watch in satisfaction as his cheeks redden.

“I didn’t know. Artie only told me you could see the future, not turn futuristic.” His avoidance at my accusation is questionable.

“I’m not a cyborg.”

“No, you are a reptile.”

“Take it back.” My eyes click, and he turns opaque. “Dammit!” I yell, the film blinking back to normal a moment before the curtain flips open and Greyson walks in with another man. I barely look at him, though, because he has my little monster.

“I brought you a present,” he teases as he sits on the edge of my bed, holding Elliot in his arms. As soon as Elliot senses me, he hops onto my bed and scrabbles up my body to rest around my neck.

His weight comforts me, and I almost forget about my father. Almost. I glare at him. But there are people here now, which means no talking to the dead.

“Thank you,” I whisper, looking at Greyson. “What the hell happened to you?” Elliot shifts at my irritation, and I lean forward, taking in Greyson’s ashen face and the dark circles rimming his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he blurts.

“Where’s the body?” I flip my legs over the side of the bed to get up, but he holds them in place. “Greyson, depending on how you killed the human, we may not have enough time to hide the evidence,” I hiss. My exhaustion prevents me from accessing that minor aspect of myself that allows me to see my visions on demand. First, I can’t get rid of them, then I can, then I can’t, and now they are being temperamental.

Dad chuckles in the corner. “I love you.”

The man beside Greyson hides his laughter behind a cough. I don’t yet look at him because Greyson looks like he killed a man. “Greyson, you always have to have a plan.
