Implications for Social Movements

As we look at the movement in the business community to do good, we begin to notice that the field of giving, serving, and community is not just for the nonprofit sector anymore. The field of doing good and helping others is part of the business ethos. At the core of the corporate movements highlighted in this chapter, we see that almost all of them have philosophically shifted their view on the role of any entity (for-profit or nonprofit). In essence, regardless of corporate structure or shareholder interests, it is in the interest of the many to perform ethically, transparently, responsibly, and purposefully for the betterment of others.

Whether its movements are in food security or creating a means and capacity to support local issues, companies are beginning to not just value but to depend on alternative models to generate business and enhance the relationships with consumers. With every product produced will there come another competing interest that wants to build upon someone else's expertise and product or service innovation? What sets the companies apart beyond price, shareholder value, and culture has been the companies' abilities to engage in social cause initiatives. Although there is immense value in the position of being a social business for good, the real intention and authenticity that come from that role is the memorable moment for most—including a new generation interested in not just what the company does, but also what the company stands for.

Dr. Maya Angelou said it best. “People will forget what you do, what you say, and what you write. People will never forget how you make them feel.” That is the power of the social business for good we have examined. The feeling of buying, learning, and being a part of a social business and movement for good is something that no other company can replicate.
