Stella found a seat in the back corner of the auditorium where she had a view of everything and no one could sneak up on her.

“Chelsea, you don’t need to guard me,” Stella grumbled at the female shifter who’d taken up a post directly behind Stella’s chair. “You’ll be more useful somewhere else.”

“Your friend insisted you have protection too,” Chelsea said, reminding Stella of their first meeting at the wolf den. “Roman stationed me here. I’m not going anywhere else.”

Stella sighed—there was no point arguing—and scanned the auditorium for likely places a witch could hide. The first audience members were just entering the auditorium.

Up in the rafters, techs had spotlights aimed at the three podiums—one for the moderator and one for each of the party candidates.

The stage backdrop included an enormous LED screen showing a red, white, and blue banner graphic that waved like a flag in the breeze.

A television camera stood in front of the stage, facing the panelists’ table. Several more were stationed around the auditorium, facing the stage.

The audio booth was above and slightly behind Stella’s seat. She could still hear technicians chattering in the booth, but that ended as the final audience members took their seats.

“It’s almost time,” Chelsea said. “They should be starting any second now.”

The other wolves were positioned against the walls on both sides of the auditorium. They’d be able to smell a witch if one came in, and Stella had her own kind of feelers. She closed her eyes and searched for any sign of magic. So far, nothing.

The moderator walked out—her high heels clicking against the floor—and took her place behind the podium at the far left. It was turned sideways so she could face both the candidates on stage and the panelists at the table.

The house lights went down, and the stage lights came on.

Terence Patterson, a man in his early sixties with thick salt-and-pepper hair, emerged from the wings, stage left. Ethan stepped out from behind the curtains, stage right, and strode confidently toward the center of the stage with his arm raised in greeting to the crowd.

Chelsea let out a breath, and her hands curled around the back of Stella’s seat.

“Everything all right?” Stella asked without turning around.

Ethan and his opponent approached each other and shook hands. Ethan smiled broadly. Patterson looked pinched. They walked to their respective podiums.

Chelsea bent low and whispered right behind Stella’s ear. “So far, it’s A-OK, but just gotta say, your man is one fiiine looking specimen.”

My man. Stella’s face felt hot. She’d never intended to have a man in her life. At least not one that she would publicly claim as her own. She liked the sound of it more than she knew she should.

Chelsea wasn’t done with her admiration. “He looks like a god next to that weasel.”

Stella pinched her lips together, trying not to laugh. That he did.

What was more, she could detect the faint inkling of Ethan’s magic—notable, given the distance between them. There had to be a hundred
