It is five years later now, long past Shanghai and the scientific recalibrations of this eighteen-year-old plan, presently underway. I’ve been riding in the back of a red hen truck for so long, thinking back on Shanghai and Mr. Cam’s visit in Indiana so deep, as a way to occupy my mind and distract from the discomfort of lying back here in this coffin-like compartment with a U metal loop on my neck, I near forgot I was here. I even tuned out the other captive girl, who’s still screaming for help in the adjacent compartment.

Yes, surely I’ve been riding in the back of a red hen truck for hours, the girl beside me screaming, but then her voice dying away, and returning. We’ve stopped now. Those two men who grabbed me stopped this truck, opened her cage, dragged her out, and, by the sounds of it, disappeared for about ten minutes. And now, we’re driving again.

I’m thinking back to this morning. To Mother’s murder during our run. Her inexplicable entanglement with Judge Rasper. How Pink Skirt tried to contain me in the park, then I forced her to take me after escaping from East Hanson’s police station, literally jumped out of Chief Castile’s window with Mother’s iPhone in an evidence bag. I think too on how I’ve named Pink Skirt Eva in my mind. I recall how Eva blamed me for being the Dentist and drilling Judge Rasper’s face, which accusation makes sense, given Viebury’s outside cameras catching me on the outskirts on the night he was drilled, but confuse me, seeing as I didn’t do it. It’s been, I believe, two hours since Eva stopped in the forest preserve and had her two goons drag and stuff me in this hen truck. I wonder where that bitch is now.

I’m dehydrated and my vision is blinded when they open my hatch door, my pupils accustomed to the dark interior of this red box. An arm reaches in, unhooks the U brace around my neck, and pulls me out like I’m a rolled rug. He drops me on the ground. It takes me a few seconds of blinking, but when my vision acclimates, I see we are in a closed barn. Next, the two men who stuffed me in one of the truck’s red caskets drag me toward a hole in the concrete floor of the barn and drop me beside it. I’m too physically drained to fight them right now, and besides, it’s more important at this stage that I not resist, save energy, and acquire information. Fortunately, I’m not blindfolded.

“Tie her arms,” Eva says. “Wand her.”

One of the losers walks to grab rope, while the other takes a rather advanced, slightly larger than a pen, wand, and roves it over my body. It beeps at my toe.

“Take your shoe off,” Eva demands.

“It’s just my toe ring. Keeps my prosthetic on. It’s a magnet.”

“A what?” she asks. “Give me that.”

She cannot take the toe from me.

I hand her the magnet and make like I’m removing my fake toe as if I’ll hand it to her.
