Thirteen

On the way home from the game, I got a text from Ryan.

Candi is going to be fine.

Nope. I took it back. Tonight could get worse.

At another ping from my phone, I tapped my car’s control center and glanced at the dashboard to read it.

We need to have a serious talk sometime soon.

And…even worse. Ryan wanting to talk seriously was never a good thing.

Ryan wanting to talk seriously while his new wife was recovering from a vampire attack? Yeah, my life was about to implode.

“Fuck,” I muttered.

“Mom!” Emma exclaimed.

“Mama said a bad word,” Joey sing-songed from the back seat. “Mama said a bad word.”

“That’s enough, Joey,” I warned. “Yes, I said a bad word. I apologize.”

I checked the rearview mirror to see Joey still mouthing the words—but at least he had quit singing, so I let it go.

As we turned onto our street, I noticed a black SUV with darkly tinted windows parked at the corner a few houses down from ours. Before Friday, I wouldn’t have paid any attention to it. After all, SUVs were the soccer mom vehicle of choice.

But Bentley drove a black Lexus.

I found myself hoping he was one of the team members watching my house tonight.

Watching over me and my children.
