Coping with Poor Performance

Before discussing Drills and Tactics for addressing maladaptive fear of failure, we need to understand one more piece of the picture. And two pictures will help...

Embarrassment and related emotions are evolutionary adaptations, but they can lead to positive or negative outcomes. For quite a few years, Figure 7.2 described the state of the research. Researchers investigated the positive outcomes (e.g., trying harder, apologies, avoiding “bad” acts), the negative outcomes (e.g., low self-esteem, depression, anger, avoiding “good” acts), and which emotions (shame vs. guilt) were more maladaptive. My colleagues and I realized that how we cope with these emotions, meaning how we respond, makes an important difference in which types of outcomes we experience (Figure 7.3). For example, one climber may fall, view it as a failure, and be de-motivated, even feel worthless, taking a blow to his self-esteem. In contrast, another climber may take the same fall on the same climb, view it as a challenge or a learning experience, and be more motivated, with her self-esteem unaffected.
