Chapter Twenty-One

Ernest

Stefano unlocks the front door and lets us into the house. The place is massive. It’s a good piece of real estate except for its ghost problem. Everyone in town knows about Old Lady Edith. As far as ghosts go, she’s difficult to ignore. She once even tried to petition town hall to stop people from kissing their mates in public. How a ghost can petition town hall, I don’t know, but she sure gave the mayor hell.

We’re dripping water on the wooden floor in the hallway as Stefano turns on the lights. I’m surprised we were out so long without any success. How can it be so difficult to find one woman in Silver Springs? It’s not exactly a big town.

There’s a nervous rolling in my gut. I might not read romance or watch romantic movies, but even I know what happens when a couple, or in this case a quartet, get caught in the rain together.

I glance over at Stefano and Chett. How do they make this look so easy?

Then again, they’re probably not virgins.

It’s a bit of a challenge to lose your virginity when you can’t even talk to a woman without turning into a book. It’s definitely a mood killer. Not that I’ve ever gotten close enough to losing it to test that theory.

“I’ll grab some towels,” Stefano says gruffly, his Italian accent particularly thick.

Chett is touching Venus. Small, almost insignificant touches. A hand on her back to guide her into the living room, a brush of her hair away from her eyes—but I want to push him away from her. I’m surprised by my own jealousy.

It’s not that I don’t want him to touch her. I just want to touch her, too, and I don’t know how to go about it.

Stop being a chicken. I give myself a bit of a shake and cross the room towards them. This can’t be that hard. People—other people, people who don’t randomly transform into books when they’re nervous—do it all the time.

I’ve kissed a girl before. Admittedly, I was young, and it didn’t exactly end well. But I think I have a good understanding of the mechanics of the act itself.

Chett leans forward, and I just know he’s going to kiss her. If I tried that, I’d probably end up as a paperback on the floor next to her feet.

Their lips touch and my stomach twists with jealousy. I move towards them, but hesitate. I have absolutely no idea what I’m doing.

“I’m a virgin,” I blurt out before I can stop myself.

I’m not sure why I’m telling them, but I really don’t want to mess this up. You hear horror stories of first times that go horribly wrong. I really don’t want that for my first time with Venus. That’s if we’re even going to have sex. Between her memory loss and my book problem, there’s a real chance she’ll run from the house screaming.

Venus and Chett don’t say anything as they pull apart. Venus smiles sweetly at me, and I can’t help but wonder what she’s thinking.
