CHAPTER 13

Brice didn't know when he had felt more alive, terrified, and happy all at the same time. The woman he loved was the most magnificent creature he'd ever beheld, and she loved him. Yet, a moment earlier, demons had tried to suck them both into a vortex to Hell.

He should behave as if he was unaffected, but he sat next to Abigail on the settee and gripped her hand in his. He didn’t care one bit what the rest of the people in the room thought. He needed to touch her, and she didn't protest.

Mei Lin broke the awkward silence. "I have sent word to Spero Hall and London informing them that we will be leaving for Bath."

"Why Bath?" Brice was not a big advocate for the crowded holiday-focused city.

As ever, Mei's tone was even and measured. "It isn't far from Stonehenge. They have had even more rain than usual." She pointed to the rain that had started since the demons had come. "The company has a very large house there that will accommodate our entire party."

Stuart opened the door and announced that Angus Fletcher had arrived.

Angus sauntered in and surveyed the room. "I heard there was a commotion."

"Are you spying on this house, Fletch?" Brice didn't know if he should be offended or amused.

"I prefer to think of it as another layer of protection. Though, I see I'm a bit late to the party. The MacGregors are having a look around the house and gardens." Fletch slid into a chair next to a very fine harp and plucked a string.

“You are right on time,” Jane said. “We have just begun a discussion of the events.”

"I need a full account of what happened, Abigail." Mary paced the edge of the gathering hair flying in all directions.

Jane rested a hand on her arm. "Sit. I believe Abigail has much to tell us."

Squeezing Abigail's hand, Brice said, "Before the demons interrupted our day, we had just asked Stuart to send for you."

"With Brice's help, I believe I found a spell to subdue demons, but I didn't want to read it until Mary was here." Abigail took the book from Brice's hand.

"Why Miss Mary?" Fletcher asked.

Mary stepped into the grouping of chairs and sat as Jane has suggested. She was calmer, likely thanks to Jane's magic. "I can nullify magic. So that if just the reading of a spell is without the casting, I can keep the production of magic from evolving."

There was a moment when no one spoke.

Then Fletcher's eyes grew wide, and his skin paled. "You would take away Mrs. Higginbotham's magic? Is this not painful?"

The man always surprised Brice with his way of knowing things that would seem out of his scope.

Abigail said, "It is uncomfortable but temporary. Mary will not bind my magic. That is very painful, so I've heard. She will make it so that my magic shifts into a void. I'm not looking forward to this process, but I think we must know what this spell says and decide if it can be used safely within the light of the Goddess.
