The failure of the SAS attempt to parachute into Libya and destroy aircraft on five Axis airfields led – at the suggestion of the LRDG – to a change in tactics. In future, Stirling and his men would be transported to their targets in the Ford trucks of the LRDG.

In December, ‘S1’ Patrol, comprising 19 men and commanded by Captain ‘Gus’ Holliman, left Jalo to take two SAS raiding parties to the airfields at Tamet and Sirte, 350 miles to the north-west. Holliman’s navigator was actually an Englishman called, Mike Sadler, who had recently joined the Rhodesian Patrol. He described the Fords as ‘pretty clapped out’ and en route to the target it took three hours to cover a 20-mile expanse of rocky broken ground.
