Chapter 18

Kassidy was up early the next morning, dressed in one of only two pairs of jeans she owned, and the blue Henley Bonnie had insisted Kassidy keep. She’d finished breakfast - two slices of buttered toast and a cup of coffee. She slipped on her sneakers, looked down at them, then over at the hiking boots Jack had insisted she get, and decided that the boots at least presented a little less of a relaxed picture and changed into them. She’d checked her appearance in the mirrors half a dozen times, and decided whatever image she portrayed, it wasn’t going to change since she had little to work with — no makeup, and nothing other than a brush for her long straight hair. Harrumphing at her reflection, she turned out the light, on her way out of the bathroom. She went to each room, methodically checking to be sure every light was turned off. Anything that she’d plugged in, was unplugged, and that nothing was left on that could be a hazard to the cabin itself. Equally attentive to the fireplace, she made sure there was no burning ember, then nervously tucked her key in her pocket, and opened the door, locking the knob behind herself before pulling it closed and stepping out onto the porch. This wasn’t actually her home, it belonged to someone else. Taking ultimate care of the pretty little cabin was something she was not going to take lightly.

Kassidy rattled the door a couple of times to be sure it was locked and pulled tightly closed, then turned toward the few little steps leading from the front porch to the ground. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Vance leaning on a side-by-side, arms folded across his chest, watching her. “Good morning,” she said, her surprise evident.

“Good morning,” he returned, pushing himself off the side-by-side to take a couple of steps toward her and the cabin. “Wasn’t sure if you’d be walking to work this morning, so I decided to come offer a ride.”

“How thoughtful,” she said, going down the steps and walking toward him.

Vance smiled at her as she approached him. “Let me help you get in,” he said.

Kassidy took his outstretched hand to steady herself as she stepped on the metal running board to step up into the high riding side-by-side. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

“Did you hear the lion roaring last night?” she asked.

“Can’t say that I did, but then, there’s always someone roaring on this mountain. Unless it’s a call for help, I tend to tune them out. Why? Did it frighten you?”

“No, not at all. It made me feel more secure. Like nothing could get through him to get to me.”

Vance smiled to himself. “Nothing will get to you here, Kassidy. I wouldn’t allow it. No one would allow it.”

“I’m figuring that out.” She looked around the side-by-side as they drove toward work. “This is a nice golf cart,” she said, running her hand over the bench seat. She looked through the glass windshield, then up to the roof over her head.
