Chapter Twelve

Aidyn portaled back to the fae camp so angry that lightning flashed through the snowy darkness. His emotions were going to cause a blizzard if he didn’t settle down.

“What happened?” Ranata was there, worry lining her brow.

“Baal was with her. He looked to be well except he had no power. According to him, he was there to protect the female from my charms, which was code for him.”

“What code?” Lucan asked.

“Leria has never fallen for my charms. She is a strong woman, and it was his way of telling me she was weak. When I touched her, I sensed her dragon was gone, but the Phoenix remained.”

“You got close enough to touch her?” Ranata seemed surprised.

“It was only the two of them though I’m sure Quinn was watching. I used a language only the gods know, but I’m certain Baal also knows some of it being close to Hades.” He rolled his fingers into his palms. “I told Leria I was breaking our bond when in reality I was reminding Baal that she still carries the Phoenix and I informed him Diego was watching.”

“Is there any way Quinn would understand you?” Ranata asked.

“Doubtful. Only those closest to a god would even know the most common of our words. Quinn has her dragon trapped on his body in the form of a tattoo.”

“How do you know this?” Ranata asked.

“Long story, but I am able to read Baal’s thoughts.”

Ranata dropped to her seat. “Damn. I had no idea that it was possible to take a dragon in such a way. I’m assuming that if he dies, the dragon dies with him?”

“That would be my guess, but I think the only one who can confirm that would be Quadira since she is the creator of the Draki.”

“Where is Diego?” Lucan asked, looking around.

“My brother has followed them through their portal. He will return once he has done his recon,” Caleb replied from the corner of the tent. “I will seek Quadira to inquire on Leria’s dragon and return once I have an answer. I expect you’ll be working on a plan to rescue them while I am away?”

“You know I will,” Aidyn replied.

“Very good.” Caleb stepped from the tent.

“If we don’t pull this off by the next full moon, you will have to step down as queen.”

“Excuse me?” Ranata folded her hands in her lap and stared at him.

“It’s what Quinn wants and maybe we just need to play along. I already pledged the guardians to their side.”

“Hmm, I understand. Why wait? Why don’t I step down now and let him have it?” She smiled.

“You have a plan, don’t you?”

“Maybe, but we need to know that Leria and Baal will be safe. And Leria’s dragon, of course,” she added.

“Agreed. What is your idea?”

“We use my abdication to bring Quinn to us.”

He gave a slow nod. “I like this. We need to work on taking him down while protecting those we love. He may not be able to resist an invitation from you to hand over your crown.
