Cordelia

Between the droning of the air conditioning and the steady tick-tick-ticking of the clock on the wall, I was almost nodding off, and it was only the first day of class. Not exactly a great first impression on the professor, I was sure.

I'd been up all night at the hospital waiting for news about Gran. She'd fallen and hit her head, or maybe the other way round. It wasn't super clear. They did scans and tests to see if something more serious was wrong. Either way, it took her a while to regain consciousness.

Longer than I was comfortable with.

By the time she did and realized what had happened, she was embarrassed. She hated when people made a fuss over her, and this was one of the fussiest things that had happened in my memory.

She wouldn't let me stay either. Had asked the nurses to escort me out, telling me I was only allowed back after classes. So here I was. In my last class of the day. Exhausted but trying.

Professor Clarkson had been droning on over the syllabus, what we would cover, and the books we needed. He only seemed to perk up when he realized he was going to be able to stop talking soon.

"For this class, you will complete the homework in pairs. As such, you have been assigned partners that you will work with for the rest of the semester. Please raise your hand when your name is called to see who your partner is." He listed off pairs of students, and when he got to my name, I raised my hand, looking around the room for the matching raised hand.

My gaze landed on a guy that looked as nervous as I felt. He gave me a small, tight-lipped smile and a nod. I returned both.

The name listing went on for another minute or so before it finally stopped. "Now that you have your partners, I'll give you the remaining time in class to exchange contact information. Remember, every assignment on the syllabus marked with an asterisk must be completed by the two of you together. Anyone found riding their partner's coat tails will have points docked from their final letter grade." He strode away from the podium where he'd been lecturing, and we were all left to find our partners and introduce ourselves awkwardly.

I hadn't even had time to pack my stuff up before the guy was in front of me. "Cordelia?"

I nodded. "Milo?"

He grinned and nodded. "So partners, hum? I hope it's not too much of a drag."

I shrugged as I shoved my pen into the front pocket of my backpack. "It's only a drag if we let it be." I felt older than him, mentally and physically. Maybe that would change as we worked together, but right now, he just seemed young and inexperienced in the ways of the world.

"Truth," he replied. His tone had changed, though.

I looked at him again as I stood and slung my backpack over my shoulders, the gentle thud
