FOURTEEN

Almost six hours later I’d skimmed through three of the books and listened in on countless updates as various members of Rider’s security team entered the office to advise of latest developments, not that any of the developments were that spectacular. They still hadn’t identified the asshole who’d shot at me or located the men they actually had identified. The bastards had went underground like the rats they were. A lot of the updates had to do with actions being taken to ensure the police didn’t get involved. The security camera footage had all been wiped clean before local law enforcement had a chance to view it in order to keep Daniel and I off their radar and Rider was deflecting reports of a large monster landing on top of the roof as fast as they came in.

Rider shut down his computer, leaned back and stretched. “I hate this type of crap,” he complained. “I’d rather be out there rooting out those bastards.”

“Your tech team couldn’t handle responding to the monster rumors?”

“They could, but I’d rather have them focused on more important issues. Besides, if I was out there I’d be worried about you here. Dealing with the rumors is simple enough to do while overseeing everything else going on.”

“What happens when you sleep? Are you leaving someone else in charge?”

“Tony will take over overseeing the operation. He’ll wake me if something major happens. I’m going to feed you before sunrise and I want you to sleep until nightfall. I also want you trained to fight so trust me, you’re going to want a full day’s rest.”

“I’m going to want a full day’s rest after going through these books,” I said. “These are so old. Where did you get them?”

“I’ve collected them from various places throughout the years. I had to kill for some of them.”

My mouth dropped open. “You killed people for books?”

“No. I killed horrible monsters for knowledge,” he corrected me. “Not to mention, those books are extremely dangerous in the wrong hands.”

“Yeah, I’ve stumbled along some pretty terrible spells,” I said. “The spells are real?”

“Yes.”

“One of them required the heart of a newborn child.”

“Yeah, I killed the previous owner of that book. Unfortunately, I only learned of her after she’d worked a spell requiring the eyes of twenty holy men. Still want to look at me like I went too far to get that book away from her before she started slicing up infants?”

I shook my head. “No. It’s hard to believe people can reach that degree of evil.”

“Power and money have always had a way of corrupting people.”

“How have you managed not to give in to the lure of it in all this time? I know you said looking at your mother’s portrait helped, but there has to be more to it than that.”

Rider stared at his hands for a moment before standing up and taking the books from me to replace on the shelves. “The more you kill, the easier it becomes. If you keep killing innocent people the guilt loses its power.
