Dead People Houses

“No day — no way,” Theo said with his lip about as far out as his brother and sister had ever seen it. He had Mei-mei balled up in a fist.

The kids had gone out of the front door, crossed the street in the direction of Jumbo Gumbo. But then, when they were sure Madame Mercedes wouldn’t be watching, they doubled back and slipped behind the Vampire House.

Where the cemetery sat like a miniature city of the dead.

“That’s fine,” Maddie said. “Go back up into the house and tell Madame Mercedes you aren’t feeling well. We’ll be back as soon as we can.”
