Chapter 10: Broken Trust

Work on the tunnel system progressed fast. Clara finished all the tunnels, fake walls and hidden doors a few days after the workers had finished all thirteen new buildings on her estate. Although the workers were grateful for their improved living conditions, they were disappointed when they learned the four-foot poles were no longer required. This meant the steady stream of coins, which they had become accustomed to, would now dry up. To reassure them, the vampiress decided to give them each five coins on their next payday, instead of the one they had been used to. She had a decent stash of coins from feeding predominantly on wealthy landowners and collecting tax from them at the same time. A few of them had stopped keeping coins at their homes after her first visit. But after she had threatened them, there had always been a few coins for her whenever she visited for some blood. Some of these men could not wait for her to feed on them again. The kiss, which numbed their necks, was very sensual. Once they had realised there would come no harm to them, as long as they allowed her to feed and to take a few coins, they truly looked forward to her visits. Johann had also sold some of her produce at the market and had, rather begrudgingly, paid her the ten percent cut of his income. With all these income streams, she ensured each worker would get one coin each week on top of their provisions. But she wanted to address their concerns with the nice bonus of five coins at the end of that week.

Greta, who had delivered the coins to the workers each week, was eager to surprise them with this generous gift from the vampiress. To ensure the workers did not learn about the cave, she went to the house about an hour before daybreak. While waiting for the workers to arrive, many thoughts formed in her mind. The number of coins she had with her would give her a very comfortable life for a long time. A cave was no place for a woman like her to live. Although Clara had promised her and Katharina that they would move into the house soon, she did not want to live by the vampiress’ rules. She quickly convinced herself she had earned these coins for putting up with all the rules and for living in a cave for all this time. Her timing had to be just right. She had to get away from the estate before the workers came looking for their coins, but she also had to wait until it was too light for the vampiress to follow her. However, some workers would be at the house before dawn. She almost gave up on her plan, as she did not want to risk leaving in the dark. Clara would surely catch her and kill her. Then it came to her. It was a simple plan, but she was sure it would work.
