Daily life aboard Alabama took a turn on December 18, 1944, when she, along with several other ships, rode out a typhoon. Alabama listed 30 degrees on several occasions. Her planes were damaged beyond repair and three destroyers were lost in the storm. The “Mighty A” rode out a second typhoon in 1945, which caused only superficial damage.

Reports do not have to be boring. In one of his report entries, Comdr. Robert L. Campbell, seen here, of the USS Alabama, noted the condition of the enemy after an assault by Allied forces on the island of Truk in the Pacific, writing, “The First Team of the American Navy left Truk a smoking shambles.”
