Assertive Language in Action: Practical Examples
To make the importance of assertiveness in language more concrete, let us consider several examples of how it can manifest itself in everyday situations.
Let's start by expressing an opinion or idea. An example might be, "After deep reflection, I have come to the conclusion that expanding our product range might be a strategic move. Considering market trends and emerging customer preferences, I believe that such a move could enable us to attract a larger and more diverse audience."
Next, we consider a request. One might say something like, "I would like to bring to your attention a scheduling conflict that I have encountered. I have a pressing engagement today that, unfortunately, coincides with our meeting. It would be a great help to me if we could reconsider the meeting time, perhaps postponing it until tomorrow."
Regarding the rejection of a request, an example might be, "I am very flattered by your confidence in entrusting me with your project. However, I currently have many tasks to handle and would not be able to provide the necessary attention to your project. I am sorry for the inconvenience and hope you can understand my position."
When it comes to handling criticism, an assertive approach might be, "I value your feedback highly and recognize the difference in our perspectives regarding my recent decision. My decision was the result of a number of thoughtful considerations, but I am more than willing to have a constructive dialogue on this issue."
For conflict resolution, the following approach could be taken: "I recognize that our views on this issue diverge significantly. However, I am confident that with an open and flexible attitude from both of us, we are able to find a compromise solution that respects our different perspectives."
Finally, to express a need or wish, we might say, "I would very much like to spend more time in your company. I thought an evening walk might be a good opportunity for us. How about taking a walk together after dinner?"
