Urban Earth

Cities begin with land. Usually this land is a patch of earth that people gather on and form a communal identity over. The land itself can absorb energies from those who live on it and in it, and these form subtle energies. You can fully connect to these subtle energies by literally getting your hands dirty.

Exercise 7: Connecting to Urban Earth

For this, you need a very small jar, a water bottle, a garden trowel, and somewhere you can dig that won’t upset your neighbors. Unless you know how to identify poisonous plants, you should also wear gloves. Choose a spot you frequent (and can dig in) and spend a few moments observing what happens on that patch of dirt. Do you notice any insect or animal behavior? Do you recognize the plants growing in that patch? Sprinkle a little water on the soil and then dig down as far as you reasonably can with just the garden trowel. Take a close look at the soil. Notice any differences in color, texture, and critters at the different levels. How does it smell? What animals and plants do you find as you dig? Take a pinch of the soil and put it in your glass jar. Replace the dirt in the hole, pour out the remaining contents of your water bottle, and thank the soil.

Carry the vial of soil with you as a small neighborhood talisman. You may want to take it out and compare the feel of it with the soil in other neighborhoods. If you were to dig into the dirt on a different city block, what would you find that’s different? The next time you take mass transit, imagine one of the things you found in the soil following you. How does it get from point A to point B? How does it see the city from the perspective of living in soil? What happens when that bit of life gets encased in cement? Does that energy change?

Digging in every garden you encounter will get you arrested or worse, so only take a literal pinch of dirt from other locations. Keeping a pinch of home soil on your person also gives you a grounding touchstone. You can use this as a way of comparing the subtle energies of the soil near your home to the soil in other areas of the city. You may notice that the mental impressions you receive from your own pinch differs from a sample from even a block away.
