ABDUCTING A WOMAN FOR MARRIAGE

There are other stories within the Qur’an as well—dark stories, stories that serve as fuel for abuse even today:

Narrated Aisha: Allah’s Apostle said, “It is essential to have the consent of a virgin (for the marriage).” I said, “A virgin feels shy.” The Prophet said, “Her silence means her consent.” Some people said, “If a man falls in love with an orphan slave girl or a virgin and she refuses (him) and then he makes a trick by bringing two false witnesses to testify that he has married her, and then she attains the age of puberty and agrees to marry him and the judge accepts the false witness and the husband knows that the witnesses were false ones, he may consummate his marriage” (Sahih Bukhari, 9.86.101).

There is also the ruling that if a man travels to a new country, he can have sex with any woman he wants as long as he pays her. And if a man happens to get bored with a wife and doesn’t want to be married to her anymore, he can just pay and divorce her.

Even though the words of the Qur’an come from a moment in history fourteen centuries ago, the attitudes contained in the Qur’an remain today. Not long ago, I met someone who told me about a picture he had been sent from a friend in Turkey who had invited a Muslim man and his family over for dinner. The man had agreed as long as the food was halal and had turned up with his whole family—two children and three wives. The host had been expecting that there would be more than one wife, and he was not surprised to see that all three of them were wearing full burkas, with mesh across the eyes. What stunned him and caused him to take a picture was the fact that the three women were all chained at the wrist. And the husband was holding the chain.

Today in Turkey, a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) ally—as well as in dozens of other countries, I am sure—there are men who chain their wives up as if they were slaves, cover their wives’ faces as if they were criminals, and happily pose for photos as though they are showing off the latest trophy they have hunted down. And all in the name of Islam.

The message is clear: men, whether they are husbands or fathers, have all the power. The women they are in charge of—their wives and daughters—are theirs to do with as they please.
