CHAPTER 30

GREG

“That was a cunning move,” Raff muttered as he drove me back to the rental house after I’d explained the plan for us all to move in together.

“I want what’s best for Floyd,” I protested.

“And for you. Dude, she’s snarkier than Sadie … and she’s seeing someone else,” Raff mumbled, turning to eye me carefully. “Must I remind you about the ultimatum she gave you?”

“I know … but she’s grown up a lot since then. The old Eliza would never have agreed to dinner … or the auction today. You didn’t know her back then she was as stubborn as fuck. At that time, if she held a grudge, it was for life.”

My cell rang. “This will be Deakon, Levi said he might call,” I mumbled, as I shifted my weight and pulled my phone out of my pocket.

Lori’s name flashed on the screen and my heart sank. “Fuck.”

“What?” Raff asked, his head spinning in my direction.

“It’s Lori Sinclair,” I said my lips twisting in thought. For a moment I felt reluctant to answer.

“I thought you really liked her?” he probed.

“I do,” I insisted.

While we were talking, Lori’s call cut off. Seconds later my voicemail alert went off.

Raff nodded briefly at my cell phone in my lap. “Now she thinks you’re avoiding her.”

“Am I? You’ve seen how full on it’s been since I saw her. I spent one night with her … it’s not as if I’m in a full-blown relationship with her yet.”

“The way I see it, your focus is in one camp—here. You’re making time for dinner with Eliza. Buying houses for Floyd. Arranging for all of us to move in together … what the fuck is it with that?”

I flashed him a dark scowl. “What do you mean?”

“You and me moving in with your buddy, I get that … but insisting your ex-girlfriend—”

"Floyd’s sister,” I reminded him.

“Yeah, keep telling yourself that’s the only reason,” he mused flatly, as he stared straight ahead at the road.

“I’m not avoiding Lori,” I said changing the subject back to his original comment. “I’ll call her when I get indoors,” I insisted.

“So, you’re definitely calling her?”

“I said so, didn’t I?” I argued. From my point of view, I hadn’t been putting it off. The truth was I was kidding myself. I hadn’t given Lori a thought since I’d had dinner with Eliza.

My gut told me Lori would be easy to be with … might even hero-worship me. That wasn’t what I wanted from a partner at all. Eliza wasn’t easy to be with, but if I couldn’t have her, I didn’t want anyone else.

“You know what? I am going to call Lori, she deserves my time, but I’ve decided I won’t go and see her—not when I feel how I do about Eliza.”

“She’s with some other guy … and she won’t leave Ireland, you said so yourself,” Raff mumbled.

“Maybe not, but I’m established enough with the band, that when I’m not working I can be here.”

“Just like that?”

“No … it would be fucking hard, but … I don’t want to live without her in my life anymore.
