Chapter Twenty-Two

CALEB

The two of us blasted through the woods together, keeping our eyes and ears open for any sign of the rival Pack. I didn’t know what to expect from them and knowing that they wanted to get their hands on Lilly made my stomach hurt. I wanted to protect her, but I wasn’t sure how. Samuel seemed to pretty much hate me, and even though Lilly told him that he was stuck with me due to the whole soulmate business, I was pretty sure he would fight me being at their house. And I knew Lillian would never leave her Pack to come stay with us. Even if she did, I didn’t think she would be that much safer.

We arrived at the house, and I headed straight to my room, slamming the door a little too hard. I pushed my hands through my hair in frustration. I had never felt so useless. I hated putting my family in danger, but I knew they would have my back no matter what. I cared about this girl more than I ever thought possible. I paced the room, trying to come up with a plan. Kill them all seemed reasonable. They wouldn’t hurt anyone ever again if we went down that route.

I wasn’t sure if Samuel would be on board with that plan. And I admittedly wasn’t sure how easy it was to kill a werewolf. I didn’t have much experience in that department, and it bothered me. There wasn’t much I didn’t know at least something about. I sighed loudly, gathered a change of clothes, and went to stand beneath the scalding spray of the shower. I barely felt it. There had to be something we could do to drive them away.

I don’t know how long I stayed there, lost in my own thoughts, but eventually the water cooled, and I climbed out and dressed, heading down to speak with my family. They were waiting for me in the living room. “So,” Richard said, sitting forward as I walked into the room. “What’s the plan?”

I shook my head. “What do you mean?” I asked, folding my arms across my chest. Why did they assume I had a plan?

“Come on, Caleb,” Kalene said, shaking her head. “We all saw how you were with her.”

“I didn’t,” Miranda grumbled, folding her arms across her chest. “You all just took off and left me here, confused as hell.” She glared at Richard.

Richard took her hand and pressed a kiss to the inside of her wrist. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t know if a fight would break out and that sounded like a bad idea, having a human in the middle of a standoff with vampires and werewolves.”

She grumbled and rolled her eyes, but let it go. “Continue,” she said, waving her hand toward Kalene.

“Right,” she said with an apologetic smile. “Most of us saw how you were with Lillian. Even without my Empathy, we could see you care about her.”

I sighed and folded my arms across my chest.
