Chapter 7

Across from Mella, Victor cleared his throat. He pulled slightly back from her, then as if reconsidering, settled back onto the speckled burgundy granite, forearms braced, fingers linked. “Being able to pay a rescue forward is something few are able to do. You’re very lucky.” Victor’s mouth was still the shape of seduction and self-control. There was nothing of pity in him. Which was what made Mella want to keep talking.

She swirled the drink in her glass, not looking at him, only seeing the scarlet truth serum stirring in the delicate crystal.

“My parents died when I was eight,” she said. “They were walking together when they were run over by a car.” The truth of her past spilled out like blood, staining what had been an easy afternoon in Victor’s brightly lit kitchen. “My aunt took me in when I felt the most alone.”

“She must be a remarkable and patient woman.” His unexpected remark teased a smile out of her.

“Yes, she is.” Mella took another sip of her drink, savoring its heady flavor. Was it a love potion or sweetened truth serum? Either way, she’d never felt more attracted to Victor, or more soothed by his presence, than in that moment.

Away from everyone else, it was easy to talk to him. She’d forgotten. His house was cozy and warm, a surprising mix of handmade wooden furniture and warm fabrics. Rugs on the floor, a burgundy-and-gold tapestry hanging along the entire back wall of the living room they’d walked through. She’d expected glass and harsh modern lines, geometry and display cases masquerading as furniture, but what she got was so much better.

It was humbling how much she had misjudged him. This serious man also cooked joyous meals. This logical architect listened while she wailed about her savior complex. It was easier to think about those things rather than dwell on the attraction between them that made her consider more than a no-strings affair.

“Your aunt also raised a remarkable woman of her own.”

Mella pulled herself back from her thoughts, ran the conversation over in her mind to find the thread she’d abandoned. “What? I’m not patient, too?”

“Let’s not get carried away here.”

“You wouldn’t say that if you knew how long I’ve been waiting to get into your pants.” She clapped her hand over her mouth when she realized what she said. “Damn! I mean, I’m looking forward to tasting what you have tonight.” She dropped her face into her hands and groaned in embarrassment. What are you doing, Michaela? She peeked up at him, hoping he didn’t think she was too much of an idiot.

The smile lurking around Victor’s mouth became an outright laugh. The corners of his sloe eyes crinkled with mirth, and the sound of his joy took up every bit of space in the kitchen.

“It’s okay,” he said when his laughter tapered off to occasional chuckles. “Do you want another?” He gestured to her nearly empty glass.

She shook her head, cheeks still hot with mortification. “At the rate I’m going, I need to cut myself off now.
