Relevant
Its the cry of my heart, my King,
That Iâd display Your majesty
Jesus was relevant. He was relevant for one reason, and one reason only: He was in the Father and the Father was in Him. Jesus only did what He saw the Father do and He only said what He heard the Father say. He lived daily in His Fatherâs presence. His worship is what defined relevant. And Jesus defined relevant His whole life. All thirty-three years of it.
Jesus defined relevant when He was born in a manger, and as a child, a youth, and a carpenterâs son. He defined relevant when only a handful of people knew who He was. He defined relevant when thousands followed Him, hanging on His every word. When He healed the sick, when He raised the dead, when He fed hungry people, He was defining relevant. And the same was true when He ate with sinners and forgave the woman caught in adultery. He defined relevant when He walked on water and set people free.
And Jesus defined relevant when He told the masses that in order to be saved they would have to eat His flesh and drink His blood (see John 6). He defined relevant when all but His twelve disciples left Him. He defined relevant when He went to the temple with a whip and threw over some tables. When He stood before Herod, when He was beaten and hung on a cross, when He died, and again when He rose, each and every time He was defining relevant. And not once was relevant defined by what He did; rather, it was defined by whom He was in and who was in Him.
We know we are relevant the moment we can say in our hearts, âI am in the Father and the Father is in me.â We know we are relevant the moment the next statement is true: âAnyone who has seen me has seen my Father.â You see, relevance is about becoming one with Him (see John 17:21), about discovering His presence, about a worship lifestyle. Yes, it will look like the miraculous; yes, it will look like hiddenness; and yes, it will look like misunderstanding. It will look like thousands of followers, and it will also look like no one following, except maybe a few sweet children who want to see the lion in the backyard.
And yes, relevant will look like suffering and dying. And yes, relevant will look like resurrection life. And all along the way it will set people free, invite revelation, and empower transformation. All along the way we will know success, not a success determined by this world, not a success determined by attendance numbers or lasers, but a success determined by His daily presence.
