Chapter 12. A Werewolf Stripper and the Vamp who Catches his Eye

I’d returned to bed after speaking with Madison last night. No nightmares have haunted me since. As the morning light turns the backs of my eyelids a dark red, a warmth surrounds me as I come out of sleep. Soft, prickly hairs tickle my jawline.

Derick’s gently rubbing his jaw against the side of my face. He breathes in deeply, inhaling my scent.

I stretch, as is habit, making a calming, contented hmm sound. Waking in his arms is paradise.

“I love you so much,” he whispers in my ear, his breath soft and caressing against my lobe.

I smile, a peace settling over me. “I love you, too.”

“Can I tell you a secret?”

I turn to face him, finally opening my eyes to find his handsome face. Another secret? I push down dread before it swallows me. “Of course.”

“I woke up last night and heard you in the kitchen with Madison.”

My eyes drift away from his, afraid of what he thinks of me feeling unsettled about being a vampire. I believe I’d even compared the way I felt to drowning. Is it possible he missed that part?

“How much did you hear?” I ask.

“Everything. I was actually about to go see you when I heard Madison. I’m glad she was there to console you.”

“Me, too. So... you heard the part about me struggling with being...” Dead. I’m struggling with being dead. Technically, though, I’m alive somehow. “...undead?”

“Yes.”

I’m sorry you heard that,” I tell him, still not meeting his eyes. “This is all new to me still.”

“Hailey,” he says softly, tilting my chin up with the tip of his forefinger. He always does this when he wants me to look at him, so I do. “I expected you to feel this way at first... maybe even for a while. Those of us who went out in a traumatic way often struggle with our new identity after we come back.”

“But I thought I was ready to be yours forever.”

“As ready as you may have been, you were taken violently. I wanted it to be romantic, soothing... I wanted to be the one to do it. You died in one of the worst ways possible.” Tears prick my eyes, cool ones instead of the warm ones I’m used to. He reaches out and holds my face close to his, closing his eyes with me as he leans his forehead against mine. “I swear to you that I will always give you love. I’ll take in all your pain. I’ll help you get past this weighing agony you feel. It might have been several decades ago that I was taken just as tragically from the human world, but I still remember how crippling it felt. Don’t be sorry for feeling what you feel. I will always share in that with you.”

I inhale sharply, feeling his words hitting me right in my heart. When I’m with him, and we’re openly baring our souls to one another, I know everything will be all right.
