Nearly every night, Therese’s parents argued loudly. She would cover her ears with pillows trying to drown out the hurtful things her father was screaming to her mother. Her mother was a frightened, passive woman who went to great lengths to appease and placate her husband, but her efforts rarely succeeded.

Therese’s first husband had an alcoholic father and a physically ill mother. Therese’s second husband came from a family similar to Therese’s, with a rageful, abusive (though not addicted) father and a frightened, needy mother. Together the dynamics of both her husbands’ families closely resembled those of Therese’s.

Therese had two siblings—a sister who was two years older and a brother one year younger. Her sister died in a car accident when Therese was seven. Her brother was a compulsive overeater as a child; today, as an adult, he is obese and continues to regularly overeat.

Now let’s take a look farther up the family tree at Therese’s grandparents. Her maternal grandfather was an alcoholic and a compulsive gambler; her maternal grandmother was a compulsive overeater who often flew unexpectedly into fits of rage. Her paternal grandmother died a few weeks after giving birth to Therese’s father, leaving him without a mother. Her paternal grandfather lived in chronic poverty throughout his life and was barely able to feed and clothe his son.
