There is a sad story about an unknown redheaded boy found frozen to death in the Great Smoky Mountains in 1915. The kind strangers who found him took him to the Sugarlands Community. They tried for three days to identify him but could not. The residents then banded together and buried him.

The story is that it took 60 years to solve the mystery of the boy’s identity. We selected this story for this book because it was a mystery which had been solved.

Almost immediately in our research, we chanced upon information which raised the question: How could Edward McKinley’s identity have remained a mystery for 60 years? And why?

After delving into these questions for months, we found an intriguing explanation. Consequently, we have written the Edward McKinley mystery in two sections.

Section A tells the Edward McKinley story as it has been told and written since 1915.

Section B is the intriguing explanation we found as to how, and why, Edward McKinley’s identity was a mystery to so many people for over 60 years.

Section C reports details we have learned, thanks to our readers, about Edward’s fateful journey since this book published in 1998 and this update in 2001.
