Chapter Twenty-One

“Certain things catch your eye,

but pursue only those that capture the heart.”

—Ancient Native American Proverb

1:40 a.m.

Mayhem steered out of the woods, pulled to the side of the road, and hit the trunk release. When Shawnee didn’t emerge right away, he told Poe, “Perhaps I should check on her.”

Amused, Poe’s wings bounced up and down, and Mayhem stroked the crown of his head.

“You know, one of these days you will have to forgive her.”

Poe whipped his bill toward the passenger seat.

“Today is not that day, I see. All right. Stay put, please.” He got out and strode to the back bumper, his gaze roaming the forest edge.

At the trunk, he peered inside. Out cold, Shawnee lay face-up, eyes closed, hair soaked, covered in vomit from head to toe, flies feasting all over her.

“Oh, that’s unfortunate.” He shooed the flies away and pressed two fingers to her neck. Finding a pulse—the poor dear fainted—he hustled to the backseat and grabbed a blanket. Back at the trunk, he draped the blanket around her, cradled her in his arms, and carried her into the Caddy. Cocooned with only her face exposed, he laid her on the floor of the backseat. No need to soil the leather seats.

As he slid into the driver’s seat, Poe’s gaze volleyed between the backseat and Dad, as if questioning his motives.

“What would you have me do? I couldn’t leave her in the trunk.”

Poe closed his nictitating membrane—a thin, gray sheath used as an eyelid for catnaps during the day—and turned his entire body toward the passenger seat. In other words, he did not approve.

Mayhem drove back to the cabin, turned into the driveway, and stopped several yards away from the porch. Twisting in his seat, he called for Shawnee. She did not wake. He got out and opened the back passenger door, squatting to her level.

“Cat.” He jostled her. “Are you all right?”

From the armrest, Poe caped his wings and screeched. Little rascal.

Her eyelids flashed open. “Where am I?”

“In the Caddy, dear.”

Still out of it, she slurred, “Why can’t I move?”

“Is it too tight?” He loosened the blanket from around her neck. “Better?”

The blanket cocoon rocked from side to side. “Why don’t I have arms?”

“Oh.” He cleared his throat. “Here, let me help you.” He lifted her off the floor, leaned her against the back-quarter panel, and unfurled the blanket. “There you go.”

Still out of it, her gaze roamed around the area but didn’t seem to land anywhere. “What happened?”

“You fainted, dear.” The moment he let go of her arm, she swayed. “I don’t mean to rush you, but you need to fight through the fog. We cannot face your grandfather until you’re steady on your feet.”

After a few moments, she roused. “I’m okay, I think.”

“Super. Then please head to the cabin. We shall meet you there.”

A look of betrayal crossed her face. “Wait. What?”

He waved toward the porch. “It’s straight ahead.”

“Why can’t I ride with you?”

“Run along now,” he said, tracing her up and down. “Poe and I will stay right alongside you.
