Hear

As you walk through the forest, notice any sounds. You may hear your own feet squelching through mud, or over cracking fallen branches. You may hear the scurrying sound of small animals darting into the undergrowth as you walk by. You may hear birds in the trees. You may hear squirrels chattering at each other. Or you may hear the distant hum of traffic. Whatever the sounds are, take a moment to stop and write about them in your journal, or if you prefer, speak into a sound recording device.

Touch

As you have stopped for a moment, reach out and touch something (as long as it’s not a stinging nettle!) This may be the bark of a tree or some leaves. It may be moss or a mushroom. Touch something, anything that you feel comfortable touching. Is the texture smooth or rough? Is it fine and delicate or does it feel tough? Is it both fine and tough? It is rigid or flexible?
