Chapter 4:

Hidden Depths

Liam

After that day, Emma started to spend a lot of time in my apartment.

Often, she'd pop over to borrow odds and ends, which she referred to as "shopping" at my place.

She always came in like a blast of fresh air and filled my apartment with warmth and laughter. I began to glance at the clock, waiting for her to get off work and bang on my door, yelling “Liam” at the same time.

“Your apartment is so much more fun, Liam. Mine feels like I’m still packing in or maybe packing out.”

She was clearly more comfortable there, almost as if it were her own. She'd come over to watch TV, enjoy the air conditioning or simply hang out.

I finally just showed her where the spare key was, even though I only went out two times a week.

Her presence had become a bright spot in my days, and I couldn't deny that my attraction to her was steadily growing.

After Emma discovered I worked in tech engineering, she’d had taken to calling me "guru," which always made me chuckle.

It was a playful nickname, and it reminded me of the genuine connection we'd developed.

Our hours together in my apartment flowed seamlessly. Emma and I talked, laughed, and bonded in ways that made each day brighter than the last.

One of the things Emma enjoyed most was my cooking. I always made sure she had something to eat when she came over, be it freshly baked cookies, her favorite soup, or a stack of beloved pancakes.

If I was going to be away, I’d leave her a little note on the fridge, telling her to help herself to the leftovers or to try a new dish I’d created.

One day, I came in and found a note from her. “Liam, thanks so much for your thoughtfulness. I know you don't have to cook for me. I’m glad I got to know you better. You’re one of the coolest guys I know.”

Emma would come over and be silly, quirky, and even a little bit messy. I would shake my head with a smile. She was just being herself and I accepted her for who she was, flaws and all.

Our connection deepened daily as we relished our shared moments. I eagerly anticipated her visits, her laughter, and the sparkle in her eyes when she expressed herself. Emma had no half-measures. She was passionate about everything she did.

One evening, she sat cross-legged on my couch, engrossed in a movie while I made some roasted chicken and mashed potatoes for dinner.

The aroma of the meal wafted through the apartment. “Hmmm, that smells great.”

“Wait until you taste it.”

A few minutes later, I placed a plate of oven-roasted chicken legs, mashed potatoes and vegetables on the coffee table before taking a seat beside her.

"Here you go," I said, tucking into my own plate. "Bon appetite."

She put a generous forkful in her mouth. “Hmmm, hmmmm. This has got to be the best thing you’ve cooked yet.”

As we ate, the room was filled with
