Lyra

The plan was solid: wait until a large group of Pack Savant left in their big four-by-fours and range rovers, and then strike while half the alphas were missing. I’d use my magic, Cas would use his alpha dominance, and the others would use brute strength and sharp weapons. By the end, we’d know exactly why the pack had sent rogues after us, and we’d have confirmation that they were working for the shifter Lords. And we’d have dealt with a threat to my life and my mates’ lives, hopefully freeing us up to figure out how to deal with the whole being parents thing.

But none of it went to plan.

Rasputin met us on the edge of the forest that Pack Savant called home, and together we crouched in the shadows of tree trunks and waited for the cars to go growling past, which they did about half past six in the evening.

“Ready?” Cas asked, looking us each in the eye, his dominance dialled up to its fullest. It wasn’t particularly helpful for me—it either made me want to get down on my belly to show submission or it turned me on so much that I was panting, distracting everyone else with my arousal. But Cas’s alpha sense was one of our biggest weapons. We knew most of Pack Savant were alpha’s or near-alphas, but Cas was … more. He’d always been a strong alpha, but now that he’d been given the elixir of life, there was an aura around him, like everything that made him Cas had been brought into sharper focus.

Going into a battle horny wasn’t a great idea, but I couldn’t control my body. When we checked our weapons one last time and Cas gave the command to go ahead, I called telekinetic magic to my hands and did my best to ignore the jolts of sensation that walking sent through my swollen clit.

As promised, the guys herded me into the middle of their group, keeping me surrounded at all times as we made slow, careful progress through the forest, keeping eyes and ears alert for signs of wolves or men.

Soon, the jumpy vigilance swallowed my desire until I was a hundred percent focussed, startling at animals rustling the underbrush.

“We’re close,” Jack said quietly. “The entrance is ten minutes ahead. We should get off the path.”

I took a long drink of the water bottle Royal passed me—turned out he was a real mother hen—and handed it back, calling up more and more magic as we readied for a fight. Nico was utterly silent, his calm shifted from casual to honed. The shifter knight and prince walked with us, not our everyday Nico.

“Five minutes out,” Jack said after another few fraught minutes, jumping at every little sound. “Lyra, time to shield us.”

I called on the invisibility shroud, and it had just begun to settle around us when Rasputin called a warning. “Men coming towards us, and fast. On foot this time, not in a car.”

“How many?” Nico asked, in a commander’s voice.
