The combination of the 84lb .50 caliber machine gun M2HB and its 44lb tripod M3 meant it was not an easy load to move around the battlefield on foot, as with the .30 caliber water-cooled M1917A1 machine guns in the heavy weapon platoon or company in the rifle battalions. The .50 caliber machine guns M2 were normally transported by wheeled weapon carriers that would remain as close to the infantry companies as possible so the weapons could be dismounted quickly when required. The .50 caliber machine guns M2 assigned to the non-infantry units of the infantry regiment were normally mounted on trucks for antiaircraft duties.
