Chapter 11

A compulsion as old as time reinforced the need to plumb the depths of Sariel’s soul. The beast within demanded it, chafed within its confines to claim its mate. Her fear presented a roadblock he’d have to circumvent before loosening its restraints.

His preternatural senses picked up the luminous waves undulating about Sariel’s body. Perhaps the power she wielded would test his skills firsthand. What a lethal combination these women made.

When the Euro copter circled a massive stone structure, she inhaled sharply. “You live here?” Her voice radiated wonder, fear, and excitement all rolled together, her mouth slack with awe.

Moving slowly, he reached over and gently closed her jaw with one finger. “This is one of my homes, yes. I hope you’ll be comfortable here. You’ll certainly be safe.” Hmmm, she’s not accustomed to opulence.

His intention to treat her like royalty and satisfy every whim might help sway Crystine’s opinion of his kind. At least, dissuade her from decapitating half his staff, which he’d forewarned not to harm and that one might be…testy.

He would have Sariel, regardless of any obstacles either could erect.

Of course, his luck would dictate that his friends be present upon arrival. His sigh brought a questioning frown from Sariel.

With a dismissive wave indicating the vehicles in front of his residence, he explained. “My colleagues are visiting. They will not hurt you.”

“They’re awake?”

“Apparently so. We do not need as much rest as you think.”

A red Porsche and black Lamborghini indicated Gryffen and Nichasin awaited him inside. At least Nichasin had matured enough to behave himself.

Gryffen, though thoughtful, remained part playboy, part adventurer, and full-throttle thrill-seeker. Lukas’ jaw clenched at the thought of either coming near Sariel. They could approach Crystine at their own peril.

Both women held splashes of demon gore, which would help camouflage their unique origins. Those remnants of evil’s essence should cause her pain, yet Sariel gave no outward indication of discomfort. Other than healing the more severe wounds, he could do nothing else until they reached his home. With a deep inhalation, he realized Sariel’s unique scent didn’t override that stench. Good.

When the chopper set down, he reached forward to unhook Sariel’s harness. Her discernable flinch held him back.

“I’m not a child.” A restless gaze and tightened posture broadcast her fear even without the scent tinting her aura.

“So I’ve noticed.” His beast growled at her perceiving a threat. Thoughts of roasting Nich and Gryffen for their ill timing crossed his mind.

Irony cast her hat in the mix with the realization he’d carry an unconscious Crystine into a house of vampires. All hell would break loose when she awakened.

For now, he prayed for Sariel’s success in curbing her friend’s violent streak until he enlightened them as to the precarious situation involving them all.

After exiting and rounding the front to stand by her side then shooting a questioning glance to Sariel, Lukas lifted her friend as a human might pick up a rattlesnake. The witch’s slight weight in his arms contradicted the ferocity of her spirit.
